MILLCREEK, Utah, Oct. 4, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man who attacked a Starbucks worker Thursday morning in Millcreek is in critical condition after being shot by a customer who was carrying a concealed weapon.
Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen told Gephardt Daily that the incident began to unfold about 6 a.m. when dispatchers received a panic alarm from the 7-Eleven at 3900 South and 900 East with reports of an “aggressive trespasser” who was threatening clerks and customers.
Hansen said before police could arrive the trespasser made his way to the Starbucks next door, where he attacked and injured one of the workers.
According to Hansen, a male customer responded by pulling out a concealed weapon and shot the attacker once in the chest.
The wounded man made his way back to the 7-Eleven, where three Unified Police officers had arrived on scene. Hansen said officers recognized him as the trespasser and attempted to take him into custody. When he refused to comply, officers used a stun gun to subdue him.
Police were in the process of placing him in handcuffs when they realized he had been shot.
The 37-year-old suspect — whose name has yet to be released — was rushed to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray in critical condition.
The Starbucks clerk who was attacked received a head injury and was reported in fair condition.
Hansen said the man who shot the suspect was a male in his late 50s or 60s and is licensed to carry a concealed weapon.
Investigators will spend the next few hours reconstructing the shooting to make sure it was justified.
Gephardt Daily is following the story and will provide an update as more information becomes available.
If there was more of this there would be less need for it.
