KEARNS, Utah, Sept. 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – Police investigators from Unified Police and other agencies are searching for a suspect who opened fire in a crowded park Sunday night.
Sgt. Amyee Race, UPD’s public information officer, told Gephardt Daily, the shooting happened about 8:40 p.m. in Oquirrh Park, where parties were underway at two pavilions, one of which was attended by roughly 100 people, including children.
“A couple of people from the largest gathering were confronted near a park restroom by individuals not related to either party. A confrontation took place and a male suspect pulled a gun and began shooting,” Race said.
“Our victim was hit three times, once in the shoulder, once in the cheek, and once in the head, which turned out to be a grazing wound.” He was rushed to the hospital, where he was treated and ultimately released.
One of the people who was with the victim returned fire and the suspect fled, Race said, heading south as he left Oquirrh Park. It was unclear if he was wounded.
The man who returned fire remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.
The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, between 130 and 140 pounds, 5 foot six or seven, wearing a white T-shirt, light-blue pants, with a gray or white hat.
The Unified Police Department is asking area residents to check their Arlo or Ring doorbell camera recordings from around 8:40 p.m. to see if they have any footage of the fleeing suspect.
Anyone with information is asked to call UPD at 801-840-4000. Tipsters will remain anonymous, Race said.
