WEST HAVEN, Utah, Aug. 6, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — One man was shot dead and two Weber County deputies are on mandatory leave after an officer-involved critical incident on Monday in West Haven.
“Deputies responded to a report of a threatened suicide at an apartment located at 2265 S. 1100 West in West Haven City,” says a statement released Tuesday by the WCSO.
“A family member called dispatch, reporting that an adult male was threatening self-harm and possibly under the influence of drugs. The adult male was acting erratically.
“Upon arrival, deputies found a chaotic domestic scene and began communicating with the individual, who was in possession of an edged weapon and holding two children hostage. Deputies attempted to deescalate the situation and verbally work to get the adult male to release the children.
“Unfortunately, the adult male escalated the situation, making statements of harm to one of the children, forcing our deputies to take action. Two deputies fired rounds at the adult male, resulting in his death. The children were rescued without harm.”
No one else was injured.
“The Weber County Attorney’s Office activated its critical incident protocol, and their investigators are currently on scene conducting an investigation into the incident,” the Weber County Sheriff statement says. “The two deputies who discharged their weapons have been placed on leave pending the investigation, in accordance with county policy and standard practice in any officer-involved shooting.”
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasize the availability of resources for anyone struggling with thoughts of self-harm. We are grateful that no-one else was injured due to the quick actions of our deputies.”
