WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, July 3, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — West Valley City Police and traffic detectives were at the scene of a fatal auto-pedestrian accident late Tuesday night.

Lt. Bill Merritt, WVCP, said the unfortunate incident happened a little after 11 p.m. at 3430 S. Redwood Rd., and the victim died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian called the police and was being fully cooperative, Merritt said.

The pedestrian, a man in his 50s, was crossing Redwood Road from east to west in the area of 3430 South and had almost reached the west side when he was struck by the vehicle in the far right lane.

“It doesn’t seem like there’s any kind of impairment at all,” Merritt told reporters at the scene. “We’ll be investigating whether charges will be coming, but at the present it doesn’t appear that there will be.”

He said police had been working to confirm the identity of the victim, and they were still in the process of notifying the man’s next of kin.

“Redwood Road is a very busy street,” Merritt said. “There’s a crosswalk and controlled intersection not even a block away, but unfortunately this individual made the decision to cross in an area that isn’t really well-lit, and he was not in a crosswalk.”

Redwood Road was closed while West Valley City traffic detectives were on scene, taking measurements and photos as part of their investigation.
