UTAH COUNTY, Utah, Aug. 6, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A young mother and her toddler son are dead after an early morning accident southwest of Payson.

The incident was dispatched at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, and Utah County Sheriff deputies responded to the area of 5600 West and 12000 South, an unincorporated area with orchards, Sgt. Spencer Cannon, UCSO, told Gephardt Daily.

The driver was a 20-year-old woman, traveling with her year old son.

“She was approaching a T-intersection, and it was a stop sign controlled intersection, and she failed to stop,” Cannon said.

“She hit a cement barrier, a Jersey barrier, then ended up hitting a tree. She and her 1-year-old son were in pretty bad shape.

“CPR was done on the boy at the scene, until he was transported to Mountain View Hospital. She was later, after she was extricated from the car, also taken to the hospital, where they both later died.”

A UCSO statement issued Tuesday afternoon says the woman was “driving well in excess of the speed limit.”

The initial report does not indicate whether a seat belt or car seat were in use, Cannon said.
