WASHINGTON, May 3 (UPI) — A man hijacked a Metrobus in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, causing several crashes and killing a pedestrian before running the bus up onto a curb.
District Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the suspect is now in custody and described him as an adult male who was “very distraught and violent.”
The pedestrian, a man, was killed when the bus jumped a curb in the parking lot of a gas station.
“It’s a bizarre incident, very uncharacteristic for someone to take a bus and attack a bus driver,” Lanier added.
The bus was driven a short distance but caused several accidents. Police have the weapon that was used by the suspect, described as a screwdriver or needle-nosed pliers.
“No injuries to passengers. Bus operator injured but non life threatening,” Metro Transit Police said in a statement.
