Nov. 10 (UPI) — The New York Fire Department evacuated residents of an apartment building Thursday after a crack stretching multiple floors was found near a rear wall.
FDNY shared video of the exterior cracks running along a load-bearing wall in the apartment building, adding no injuries have been reported.
Officials also closed down the block.
FDNY Chief Roger Sakowich said the crack extends from the second floor to the roof of the mid-rise building and monitors showed the wall has shifted an inch in the past 24 hours.
“The wall is moving,” he said.
The building’s landlord was already aware of the crack, but tenants eventually called a city official and FDNY reported to the scene.
Workers have installed scaffolding and utilities in the building have been shut down as a precaution.
Residents were permitted to collect important items from their apartments while accompanied by a police escort.
