LOS ANGELES, March 4 (UPI) — Police are investigating and testing a knife found on the former Los Angeles estate of O.J. Simpson.

The folding buck knife, rusted and soiled, could be the long-lost weapon used to kill Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in 1994. O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murder in 1995 for the deaths, and much of the intrigue surrounding the case stemmed from the lack of a murder weapon.

A construction worker demolishing a house on Simpson’s estate several years ago found the knife and gave it to an off-duty Los Angeles police officer who happened to be near the location of Simpson’s home. Sources told TMZ the officer did not turn it in as evidence but kept it at home until his retirement.

When authorities learned in early 2015 the officer intended to frame the knife for a home wall display, they demanded the now-retired police office give the knife to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The rusted and soiled evidence is being tested for hair and fingerprints by the LAPD Robbery Homicide Division, and next week will be moved to the Serology Unit for DNA and other biological samples.

The case is still regarded as open since there has not been a conviction. Simpson, by law, cannot be prosecuted again if new evidence becomes available.
