June 3 (UPI) — Tom Cruise says the long-awaited sequel to “Top Gun” will be called “Top Gun: Maverick.”

“Stylistically, it is going to be the same. We’re going to have the same score,” Cruise told Access Hollywood in an on-camera interview. “Aviators are back. The need for speed. We’re going to have big, fast machines. … It’s going to be a competition film like the first one and it is going to be in the same vein, the same tone as the first one, but a progression for [my character] Maverick. It’s not going to be called ‘Top Gun 2.’ It’s called Top Gun: Maverick.’ I didn’t want a number.”

The original “Top Gun,” an iconic movie about U.S. Navy pilots, was released in 1986. It co-starred Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis,Tom Skerritt, Anthony Edwards and Meg Ryan.

Cruise is currently on the promotion trail for his new film “The Mummy.”
