14-year-old dead after Millcreek shooting, five suspects in custody

MILLCREEK, Utah, Aug. 29, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A teenage Millcreek boy is dead, the victim of a weekend shooting outside the Monaco Apartments.

According to a press release issued by the Unified Police Department, John Mula, 14, was “shot while walking through the Monaco Apartments, located at 4115 S. 430 East about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 25,” when three suspects wearing black hoodies with black and white bandanas exited a brown Chevy Impala and opened fire before fleeing the scene.

“The victim was immediately transported to a local hospital, where, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased,” the UPD press release said.

“Following an intensive investigation, numerous tips, and interviews, the Unified Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit, in collaboration with the Direct Enforcement Unit at UPD, successfully apprehended all five suspects. They are currently in custody, pending charges.

“This senseless act of violence has deeply affected our community, and the Unified Police Department and Millcreek Mayor and City Council extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family.

“Violence of this nature is never the answer, and a family is now mourning the loss of a loved one due to these tragic actions.”
