SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, Feb. 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A three-truck collision near 6200 South and 2300 East on eastbound Interstate 215 closed the highway Tuesday afternoon.
Sgt. Chad Hecker, Utah Highway Patrol, said the front vehicle was a semi-trailer carrying a forklift. Behind that was a pickup with a large, double-axle trailer carrying slabs of hardened concrete. And coming up behind was a box semi.
“The two front vehicles were going less than freeway speeds,” Hecker said. “The semi truck came up behind the double-axle trailer, and rear ended that one, pushing it into the other vehicle that was ahead of it.”
Driver injuries were minor and no one was transported to the hospital, Hecker said.
“The semi truck lost what appears to be all of its oil in the engine,” he said. “One of the trucks ruptured and lost 20 or 30 gallons of diesel.”
Heavy equipment had to be brought in to remove the concrete slab, and the cleanup of oil and diesel also delayed traffic, Hecker said.
The accident happened at about noon, and the cleanup was underway at 2 p.m.
Heckler said that drivers should always be aware of the possibility of slower traffic, especially in the right lane, and “always be aware of what you are coming upon.”
