SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, Jan. 25, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 6-year-old boy was airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in critical condition following a crash in South Jordan Thursday afternoon.
The South Jordan Police Department responded to the accident at the intersection of 11400 S. Bangerter Highway at approximately 4 p.m., according to a news release from spokesman Lt. Matt Pennington.
According to witnesses, a Toyota Corolla traveling northbound on Bangerter Highway attempted to make a left turn onto 11400 South against a red light and a restricted left turn sign, the news release said. The left turn has been restricted due to ongoing road construction.
As the Corolla attempted to turn, an off-duty Unified Police Department vehicle traveling southbound struck it.
The 6-year-old boy was ejected from the Corolla and was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital with life threatening injuries; he is currently in critical condition.
The driver of the Corolla, a 46-year-old female, was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Unified Police officer was evaluated on scene for minor injuries.
Investigators with the Crash Analysis Reconstruction team are currently investigating the accident and whether or not the child was in a seatbelt or proper child restraint.
“The South Jordan Police received numerous complaints about the violations of the restricted left turn at the intersection and had been conducting targeted enforcement throughout the day prior to the accident,” the news release said. “We would like to remind drivers to please be observant and obey all traffic control devices and signs, especially in construction zones and during peak commuting hours.”
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
