HOOPER, Utah, Dec. 27, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — A 14-year-old Bluffdale teen has been found alive after enduring single-digit temperatures overnight while lost on a hunting trip in Ogden Bay.
According to a statement by the Weber County Sheriff’s Office, the search for the teen began around 9 p.m. Saturday when his hunting companion notified police the two had become separated.
Deputies said the missing teen made a couple of rambling calls to 911 just as rescue teams began arrived in scene, at the Wildlife Management area near 4600 South and 7500 West. Rescuers say the teen sounded disoriented, fueling concerns he was becoming hypothermic.
Sheriff deputies from Weber and Davis counties began an immediate search of the area. They were joined in the efforts by helicopter search crews from the Department of Public Safety, as well as LifeFlight.
The search was underway for several hours when the missing teen called his family around 1 a.m. saying he was almost home. Deputies said that didn’t make much sense since the 14-year-old’s home is in Bluffdale, more than 30 miles from the search site.
Search teams were preparing to expand the rescue efforts around 6 a.m. when Davis County emergency dispatchers received a 911 call from the Antelope Island Causeway in Syracuse. The missing teen had managed to make his way there and was calling from a landline.
Rescuers made their way to the teen a few minutes later. They say “he appeared confused and was somewhat delusional.”
The 14-year-old was transported to the hospital and his condition is unknown at this time.
