CLEARFIELD, Utah, June 4, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Clearfield police have released the name of a man fatally shot after an alleged hit-and-run road-rage chase.
The man who died was 63-year-old James Edward Saccato, from West Point.
“Detectives from the Clearfield Police Department are continuing to investigate the actions of both drivers during this road rage situation, the resulting vehicle collision and fatal shooting,” says a news release issued Tuesday by the Clearfield PD.
“Police are asking motorists who were along SR-193 between State Street and 1000 West in Clearfield on June 3, 2024, between 6:20 p.m.–6:35 p.m., who have vehicle cameras to check those camera systems for video of a dark colored 2002 Chevy K2500 truck and a white 2000 Ford Ranger.”
If a video is available, please contact Clearfield Police Department at 801-525-2800, the department said.
According to a Clearfield Police account, the older man, now known to be Saccato, rear-ended the vehicle of the younger man, said to be in his 30s, and then drove away from the scene. The younger man drove after Saccato.
The younger man called dispatch while driving, and followed Saccato to a neighborhood where Saccato exited his vehicle and began to walk toward the younger man, who then fired his gun. Saccato died at the scene. The younger man remained and cooperated with police.
“Investigators will meet with members of the Davis County Attorney’s Office on June 4, 2024, to screen the case with prosecutors to determine what charges, if any, are applicable,” the Clearfield PD statement says.
“The Clearfield Police Department expresses condolences to all those who will be affected by this incident and encourages all drivers to control their emotions while behind the wheel of a vehicle and to report accidents, traffic violations, or road rage situations to police and allow police to do the investigating.”
