SANDY, Utah, May 8, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Sandy City Fire Department crews responded to a report of a structure fire Monday night, and arrived to find heavy smoke coming from what appeared to be the second floor of a residence near 7500 South and Sandy Woods Circle.

SCFD Capt. Ryan Lessner said when the firefighters went in on the initial attack, they found that the fire was not upstairs, but was isolated in a basement room.

“Some of the residents were home, and were notified probably by smoke detectors,” Lessner said.

At least one person was treated on scene for smoke inhalation, but no one needed to go to the hospital. Lessner said there were no other injuries.

Crews went in, “had a good knock down, cleared the structure, and now they’re just investigating to try to determine the cause,” he said.

The entire house was filled with smoke, and crews conducted a thorough search to make sure no one remained inside.

Lessner said the family may be displaced, and the Red Cross has been notified.

Investigators were sifting through the material and had spoken with the homeowner as they work to determine what sparked the fire.

Lessner said the fire was contained to the room in the basement, and no dollar estimate of damage was available.
