Man dead after base jumping accident near Willard Peak

BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 30, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The body of a 27-year-old base jumper has been recovered after he was reported missing on Friday afternoon.

“An individual reported that a friend, an experienced base jumper, failed to provide an expected update following a base jump in a wingsuit,” says a statement issued by the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office.

“The Weber County Sheriff’s Office had initially been contacted, and helicopters were requested to assist with the search. The friend provided crucial information regarding potential jump locations and flight routes. Upon receiving the information, a coordinated effort was initiated to locate the individual.”

“A Department of Public Safety helicopter located the individual around 16:00 hours (4 p.m.), approximately 1 mile northwest of Willard Peak, in extremely rugged terrain. Tragically, it was confirmed that the individual had crashed and had passed away. The recovery effort required the DPS helicopter to utilize a hoist.”

The Sheriff’s Office thanked agencies for the collaborative efforts of all involved in the search and recovery. They included the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau, Weber County Sheriff’s Office, and Weber County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue.

“The individual has been identified as Jonathan Bizilia, a 27-year-old man from Alabama. We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this challenging time.”
