MAPLETON, Utah, Oct. 7, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A crossing guard stationed outside Mapleton Elementary was struck by a passing vehicle’s mirror, and fell to the pavement at about 8:45 a.m. Monday.

“The driver of a vehicle traveling east on Maple Street failed to see a school crossing guard in her crosswalk,” a Mapleton Police statement says. “The crossing guard was in a marked crosswalk with her stop sign elevated above her head.

“The driver’s vision was obscured by direct sun and a dirty windshield.

“As the driver passed through the intersection the right-side mirror of the vehicle hit the crossing guard causing her to fall to the pavement. No other people were in the crosswalk at the time of the accident.”

The crossing guard was evaluated on scene, then transported by the Mapleton Fire Department to an area hospital.

“It has been learned that the crossing guard has suffered a broken elbow and ankle that will require surgery. The driver is cooperative with investigators and has been issued a citation for failing to yield to a crossing guard,” the statement says.

It has not been determined if the driver will face charges. Gephardt Daily will share additional information as it is released.
