SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Nov. 10, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a Utah resident and possible candidate for Utah’s Senate race, has weighed in on sexual misconduct accusations against Alabama Senate nominee Roy Moore.

“Innocent until proven guilty is for criminal convictions, not elections,” Romney said in a tweet posted Friday. “I believe Leigh Corfman. Her account is too serious to ignore. Moore is unfit for office and should step aside.”

Corfman, now 53, has come forward with allegations that Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her when she was 14 and he was 32.

A Washington Post report published Thursday featured interviews with more than 30 people who said that Moore had pursued sexual relationships with multiple teens between the ages of 14 and 18 while in his 30s.

Moore, now 70, said the claims were false, and blamed Democrats and the media.

“These allegations are completely false and are a desperate political attack by the National Democrat Party and the Washington Post on this campaign,” he said.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders addressed the issue on behalf of President Donald Trump.

“Like most Americans, the president believes we cannot allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person’s life,” Sanders said. “However, the president also believes that if these allegations are true, Judge Moore will do the right thing and step aside.”

Romney has said he would be interested in pursuing one of Utah’s seats in the United States Senate if longtime Sen. Orrin Hatch elects to retire.
