OGDEN, Utah, Sept. 1, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 58-year-old man is dead after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Washington Boulevard in the 2700 block Saturday night.

The incident happened at about 9:08 p.m., Ogden City Police Lt. Glen Buss told Gephardt Daily.

“Upon arrival, they discovered a 58-year-old male suffering from critical injuries,” he said. “Officers and fire personnel providing immediate medical assistance before the individual is transported to the hospital or he tragically succumbed to his injuries.”

Buss said the preliminary investigation indicates the pedestrian was on the roadway, outside a crosswalk, when he was hit.

“A 43-year-old male fled the scene, but was later apprehended at his residence and taken into custody.”

The man arrested, Joshua Eugene Eastep, was taken into custody after photo evidence of his license plate led police to his residence.

“The arrestee was determined to be the driver, and admitted to driving the vehicle at the time of the crash after waiving his rights per Miranda,” his affidavit says.

“The arrestee stated he did not stay on scene because he was afraid. While being booked into jail, two baggies containing a crystal like substance were located on his person while inside the jail.

“The arrestee states the substance is methamphetamines, but does not know how or when they ended up in his pants.”

Eastep was booked for investigation of failure to remain at an accident involving death and possession of a controlled substance within a correctional facility, both third-degree felonies. As in all cases, charges will be determined by the county attorney’s office.

Eastep was ordered held without bail in the Weber County jail.
