MILLCREEK, Utah, Sept. 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police arrested a man early Sunday morning outside a Millcreek club after he allegedly brandished a gun and pointed it directly at people after someone tried to calm him.

Hauashton Fonua, 21, was taken into custody at 12:17 a.m. Sunday, his affidavit says. He was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault, a third-degree felony; and intoxication, a class C misdemeanor.

“Officers responded to a person with a weapon in the area of 1249 East 3300 South in front of a local club. The suspect was described as a male wearing a white hat, gray sweatshirt, and white shorts.

“Officers from a neighboring jurisdiction were able to respond to the scene and locate (the man) matching the description and were able to locate a black sig Sauer P320 handgun in his possession. (Fonua) was detained and was wearing the exact clothing description given to officers.”

Witnesses told officers they saw the man “brandish the black firearm in the air while screaming ‘I’m going to get you.’ Witnesses did not know who he was referring to but stated they were scared,” says the affidavit, filed by an officer of the Salt Lake City Police Department, one of the agencies that responded to assist.

“Officers also spoke with a victim on the scene who said that (the man) was actively waving the firearm in the air while screaming. The victim stated her cousin approached (the man) in an attempt to calm him down but (he) pointed the black firearm at his chest. The cousin of the victim then moved the firearm away from his chest, causing (the agitated man) to then point the firearm at her causing her to fear for her life.”

Officers were able to view video footage that showed him brandishing the firearm, the statement says. In talking with Fonua, police also noted the odor of alcohol and saw physical and behavioral indicators of intoxication, it says.

Post Miranda, Fonua declined to be interviewed by police. He was booked into the Salt Lake County jail system, where he remained as of Monday afternoon.
