SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 5, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police and experts from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources responded to the Capitol Hill area Wednesday morning after a bear was discovered high in a tree in the residential neighborhood.

The black bear is in the area of 247 W. Reed Ave. Officials asked people to avoid the scene, and residents to stay in their homes and keep small pets inside. No evacuations were ordered.

Salt Lake City Fire crews raised a fire engine’s ladder, and the bear was successfully tranquilized. It fell a distance of about 15 feet, police said, at about 10:40 a.m.

Utah DWR crews have training and experience safely confining bears for transport out of urban areas.
