SANDY, Utah, May 4, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — After a chase on State Street, I-15, and on foot, police early Friday morning corralled a stolen car suspect with spike strips and a police dog.
Paul Michael Schiavino, 35, was arrested by 3:30 a.m after events began when he was spotted in a car reported stolen out of South Jordan traveling southbound on State Street near 10000 S, according to charging documents. “Officers initially followed the vehicle but when the vehicle began increasing its speed, an officer activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop.”
But the vehicle accelerated at a high rate of speed, entering I-15 northbound. Officers did not pursue further, says the court file, but Schiavino was soon spotted exiting I-15 at 10600 S.
Officers set up another traffic stop when the suspect entered a parking lot of a business, but he fled again, northbound on Monroe St. Spike strips were deployed, according to Schiavino’s probable cause affidavit, which succeeded in stopping the vehicle at Rimando Way and State St.
Schiavino had fled on foot but officers located him nearby. “A police K-9 was deployed to apprehend Paul Officers reported that Paul hit the police K-9 while the K-9 was apprehending him.”
Which lead to a charge of suspicion of taunting a police service canine among the eight counts for which Schiavino was booked into jail. Medical was reportedly summoned for a dog bite on his arm.
Charges included suspicion of vehicle theft, three counts of evading police, drug possession, drug paraphernalia possession and driving on a denied license. A meth pipe and was located in the console of the stolen vehicle, the affidavit said, and a ziplock bag of suspected meth found in Schiavino’s clothing in the back seat.
A records check showed he had two 2023 convictions for drug possession, per the court documents, and was currently supervised by Adult Probation and Parole from which he is a fugitive with multiple pending arrest warrants.
