SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 22, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Sandhurst Fire burning near Ensign Peak was 82% contained Monday evening, though its cause remained unknown, state wildfire officials said.

Crews made good progress on the 204-acre fire Monday, increasing containment from just 10% Sunday evening.

“Fire behavior was minimal today, and crews continue to make progress despite the heat and wind. [Monday night] will be the last night shift, unless fire behavior dictates otherwise,” Utah Fire Info stated on social media.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, state wildfire officials said.

“Despite a thorough investigation, no conclusive evidence was found. Earlier reports of it being human caused were inaccurate,” the post says.

Evacuation orders in the area were lifted about 10 p.m. Sunday, with officials saying the wildfire’s progress toward homes had been stopped.

Mandatory evacuations had been ordered for residents north of Dorchester Drive, including Twickenham Drive, with voluntary evacuations recommended for the neighborhood west of East Capitol Boulevard and east of Victory Road.

Residents were allowed to reenter those areas Sunday night but were asked to follow Utah Fire Info on social media or visit the state wildfire website for incident updates.

Returning residents also are being asked to remain prepared to evacuate if needed.

Nonresidents are asked to avoid the area as crews continue to fight the fire.

Trail closures for Ensign Peak, Tunnel Springs and the section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail nearest the fire remain in effect.

“Please continue to respect closures to avoid impacting suppression efforts,” the post says.
