SLCPD: Man armed with hatchet arrested after alleged robbery of convenience store

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A man was arrested after Salt Lake City Police say he robbed a 7-Eleven near downtown Salt Lake City after threatening a victim with a hatchet.

The incident happened at the 7-Eleven at 309 E. 400 South on Aug. 23, says an arrest affidavit for James M. Retic, 39.

Retic allegedly “pulled a hatchet out of his pocket proceeding to get in a fighting stance against the victim. (Retic) also stole items from the store which the victim was able to describe which matched items (Retic) had in his possession when taken into custody.”

Store video captured the exchange, the affidavit says.

Officers searching Retic’s property also found a meth pipe, the statement says. He was arrested for investigation of alleged aggravated robbery, listed as a first-degree felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.

As in all cases, charges will be determined by the County District Attorney’s Office.
