SALT LAKE CITY POLICE, Aug. 12, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City police have identified a motorcyclist killed early Sunday morning when he hit a support rail on a TRAX line.

The victim was 28-year-old Talima Hopokingi.

The incident, in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, near the Guadalupe TRAX Station, was reported to dispatch at 3:33 a.m. Sunday. Salt Lake City Police and Fire officials arrived at the scene, and found Hopokingi with critical injuries, pinned under his motorcycle.

He died at the scene, the SLCPD statement says.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the man misidentified the TRAX line as the roadway, drove down the middle of the rails, and crashed into the support rails at a high rate of speed,” it says.

No UTA TRAX trains were involved in the incident.
