WASATCH COUNTY, Utah, Oct. 5, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The human-caused Yellow Lake Fire, estimated at 3,223 acres Friday, has increased to an estimated 10,817 acres on Saturday.

The fire is now 12% contained.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for the north and west forks of the Duchesne River.

“Yesterday was challenging on #YellowLakeFire,” says a statement issued by the U.S. Forest Service and shared by Utah Fire Info. “Thankfully, everyone safely exited at end of shift. The fire spread toward Soapstone Pass and east toward Rhodes Canyon. It’s burning parallel to Highway, but not impacting it.”

A more exact acreage estimate will be released after planned infrared mapping, the statement says.

“Today’s forecast brings another day of strong winds and shifting directions,” the news release continues. “Crews will continue their full suppression efforts, focusing on minimizing fire movement into the West Fork and Duchesne drainage, north in Soapstone Basin, west toward Mill Hollow and east toward the North Fork of the Duchesne. They are also working to protect structures and other values. While the fire may continue to grow, crews will prioritize holding the anchor point and keeping the fire in a manable area where suppression efforts can be effective.”

As of last night, the YMCA camp and ranger station were safe, the statement says. Piuta Girls Camps and recreational structures within the closure area were treated with retardant. A forest closure is now in effect for both portions of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache and Ashley National Forests affected by the fire.

“Yesterday demonstrated how quickly the fire can spot over long distances and spread rapidly in heavy timber, aided by strong winds and dry conditions. With another red flag warning in effect, forest managers are taking a conservative approach to ensure public and firefighter safety amid the unpredictable weather and unseasonable dangerous conditions.”

Personnel assigned to the fire currently number 423. Gephardt Daily will have more information as it is released.
