LOS ANGELES, March 21 (UPI) — An animal rescue group said a dog saved from the South Korean meat trade has a new family in Arizona after all four of her paws had to be amputated.
The California-based Animal Rescue, Media & Education group said Chi Chi the dog was found in a garbage bag near a dog meat dealer in South Korea. She was in poor health with all four of her legs bound with wire.
The group said all four of Chi Chi’s paws had to be amputated to save her life, and she was treated for an infection that had spread throughout her body.
ARME said Chi Chi’s spirit proved strong and she was playing with toys only one day after her surgery.
“Don’t ever question who can defy the odds,” ARME President and Founder Shannon Keith told The Dodo.
Keith personally drove Chi Chi to her new home with the Howell family in Arizona.
Keith said Chi Chi has been relearning how to get around since her surgery.
“Yesterday morning, we were sitting there in [the Howells’] back yard,” Keith said.
“I was sitting on a ledge, and she jumped up on it,” she said. “I was like, ‘What?! This dog is amazing!'”
The Howells said they are planning to have Chi Chi certified as a therapy animal so they can take her to visit patients who have undergone amputations.
