WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Nov. 17, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police in West Valley City are investigating a hit-and-run accident which claimed the life of an elderly man Sunday night.
According to West Valley City Police Lt. Robert Brinton, the deadly incident was first reported around 8:15 p.m.
When EMTs from the West Valley City Fire Department arrived at the accident site, they found the fatally injured man lying in the road at the intersection of 3500 South 1940 West. Despite efforts to revive him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Surveillance video obtained by police, revealed the victim, believed to be about 70-years-old, was in the crosswalk when he was hit while “going against the traffic signal,” Brinton said.
The hit-and-run driver returned to the site of the accident about 30 minutes after fleeing and was taken to WVCPD headquarters, where he is said to be cooperating with investigators.
The car he was driving at the time of the incident was found in a parking lot at 3500 South 3600 West.
The victim was not carrying ID, Brinton said.
