April 5 (UPI) — Celebrities and fashion’s brightest are just weeks away from attending the exclusive 2017 Met Gala.
Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and singers Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams will welcome a bevy of stars to a Comme des Garçons-themed fête May 1 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The Met confirmed in October that its annual Costume Institute exhibition and Met Gala will honor Comme des Garçons and its founder, 74-year-old designer Rei Kawakubo. Kawakubo established the Japanese label in 1973.
“Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past forty years,” Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton told Vogue. “By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time.”
Kawakubo will join Wintour, Perry and Williams as an honorary co-chair. People reported in February that supermodel Gisele Bundchen and her husband, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, will also serve as co-chairs.
Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga are among the celebrities who have attended previous Met Galas. The New York Times reported in May that Wintour gives final approval to all guests, who paid $30,000 per ticket and $275,000 per table in 2016. The money funds the Costume Institute.
The 2017 Met Gala will not be televised, although E! did offer live red carpet coverage in 2016. This year’s Costume Institute exhibition, “Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between,” will open May 4 and run through September 4.
