Dec. 19 (UPI) — Rose McGowan is sorry for the Marchesa remark in her since-deleted tweet criticizing Meryl Streep and other Hollywood actresses.
The 44-year-old actress said Monday that it was “beneath” her to suggest Streep and other stars wear clothes from Harvey Weinstein‘s estranged wife’s fashion line to the 2018 Golden Globe Awards.
“The Marchesa line was beneath me and I’m sorry for that. Seeing that picture of Alyssa Milano with GC has ignited something in me that I can’t quite articulate,” McGowan tweeted, referencing Weinstein’s wife, Georgina Chapman.
“There is no map for this road I’m on, I will [expletive] up,” she added. “Peace be with you, go with Goddess.”
McGowan apologized after friend and fellow actress Amber Tamblyn called her out on Twitter for the Marchesa comment. McGowan had derided Streep and other actresses in a tweet Saturday for their plan to wear black at the Golden Globes as a show of solidarity in the wake of sexual harassment and abuse allegations against Weinstein and other Hollywood players.
“Actresses, like Meryl Streep, who happily worked for The Pig Monster, are wearing black @GoldenGlobes in a silent protest,” the actress, who accused Weinstein of rape in October, wrote. “YOUR SILENCE is THE PROBLEM. You’ll accept a fake award breathlessly & affect no real change. I despise your hypocrisy. Maybe you should all wear Marchesa.”
Streep responded to McGowan’s criticism in a statement to The Huffington Post prior to the star’s apology. She interpreted McGowan’s remarks as accusing her of knowing about Weinstein’s behavior.
“It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others,” the 68-year-old actress said.
“I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know,” she reiterated. “I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.”
