SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct. 8 (UPI) — Singer Selena Gomez has opened up about being diagnosed with Lupus and having to undergo chemotherapy in a new revealing interview.
Gomez sat down with Billboard magazine recently for the their Oct. 17 issue and dropped the bombshells.
“I was diagnosed with lupus, and I’ve been through chemotherapy. That’s what my break was really about. I could’ve had a stroke,” the actress told the magazine about her time away from the spotlight.
“I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy. You’re assholes.’ I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again,” she said.
The 23-year-old has also wanted to stay out of the public eye due to the harsh criticism she has faced regarding her weight.
“This was the first year I ever dealt with anyone talking about my body,” Gomez said as reported by Page Six. “I’d land at the airport and people would yell out, ‘You’re fat!’ It was awful.”
Gomez has turned a new leaf when it comes to her body issues. The songstress recently released her latest album Revival, and even posed nude for the cover. Gomez says she has used this project as a way to channel her frustrations.
“I’m so f–king nice to everybody, and everyone is so vile to me. I’ve been working since I was 7. I’ve been a UNICEF ambassador since I was 17. It’s so disappointing that I’ve become a tabloid story,” Gomez said.
When it came time to record new songs Gomez said “the hate motivated me.”
Gomez’s second studio album, Revival featuring the hit single “Good For You,” with rapper A$AP Rocky drops Oct. 9
