WASATCH COUNTY, Dec. 24, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Sheriff’s detectives in Wasatch County have arrested a man in connection with a fatal road-rage shooting last September in Jordanelle State Park.
A probable cause statement filed in Fourth District Court says Greg DeBoer, 62, was arrested Monday, Dec. 23, after previously admitting he shot Patrick L. Hayes, 61, during a Sept. 25 road-rage incident. DeBoer said he shot Hayes in self-defense.
DeBoer now faces a second-degree felony obstruction of justice charge for allegedly burying the .45 calibre handgun, and the type of ammunition used in the shooting, in the backyard of his home.
According to the arrest document, camera footage from the Ross Creek gatehouse “shows a Jeep Gladiator pulling up behind Patrick Hayes as Mr. Hayes exited his own vehicle. Camera footage also shows Patrick Hayes was standing near the passenger side of the Jeep Gladiator when he was shot.”
A news release issued in late November by the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office, said Hayes appeared to have “a metal baton and pocket knife in hand, aggressively called the other driver out of the vehicle,” at the time of the shooting, and the case was being investigated “for all possible crimes, including homicide, and considering all defenses, including self-defense.”
The Sheriff’s Office said, in the November release, investigators were “analyzing evidence as to whether Mr. Hayes was attempting to enter the vehicle,” when he was shot.
After the shooting, “the driver of the Jeep Gladiator turned the vehicle around and drove away from the scene,” the probable cause statement says, and “tracking data obtained through search warrants from cell towers showed a 2020 Jeep Gladiator registered to Greg K. DeBoer connected to a cell tower that provides service to the area” the night of the shooting.
DeBoer lives less than 10 miles from the Ross Creek, the court document says.
