SOUTH JORDAN, Utah, June 10, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A fire at Astro Burgers in South Jordan in the early hours of Sunday morning caused up to $50,000 in damages, officials said.
South Jordan Fire Department Deputy Chief Chris Dawson told Gephardt Daily that crews were called to the burger restaurant at 10452 S. Redwood Road (1700 West) just after 1:20 a.m. after passersby noticed the building was full of smoke.
“Crews came out, found a fire back in the cooking area, so it looks like the majority of the fire damage was confined to the cooking area,” Dawson said. “Obviously based on the time, the business was closed, there was nobody here, so there were no injuries, there was nobody inside the building.”
There were also no injuries to firefighters.
It took approximately 30 minutes to knock down the fire, Dawson said, as crews had to pull out some of the stainless steel behind the stovetop area.
He said the estimated amount of damages is between $30,000 and $50,000.
“A lot of the commercial equipment was involved in the fire and obviously the entire building was charged with smoke, so there’s probably some smoke clean up as well,” Dawson said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
He said it appears a fire supression system did activate, but the fire overcame that because it was unattended.
Dawson added the restaurant is likely to be closed until repairs are made.
