Child critically wounded in accidental shooting outside Lehi Maverik station

LEHI, Utah, Sept. 3, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Lehi police are investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting outside a Lehi Maverik station Monday night.

According to officers arriving on scene, the child victim, believed to be an 8-year-old boy, was alone inside an SUV when he found a loaded weapon beneath one of the seats and accidentally shot himself.

Police say the child’s mother was inside the Maverik, located at 3569 N. Thanksgiving Way, when the shooting took place.

The gravely wounded child was rushed to a nearby hospital, then flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.

According to scanner traffic, first responders were already in the vicinity when they were dispatched to the Maverik station about 7:40 p.m. When they arrived bystanders were already rendering aid.

Details of the shooting, including the child’s age and gender, have yet to be confirmed by Lehi PD.
