SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, June 16, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — Crews battled a blaze at a Salt Lake County landfill Wednesday morning.
Salt Lake City Fire Department Captain Anthony Burton told Gephardt Daily crews were called out to the landfill at 7213 W. 1300 South at approximately 5:30 a.m.
“We only had a single company out there, so it wasn’t a large-scale incident,” Burton said. “That portion of the landfill is what they call construction waste management. So that’s all of the big roll-off dumpsters from any construction site, be it roofing materials, home remodel, carpeting, flooring, that all goes out there.”
Burton said that by 8:30 a.m., the fire was 90% contained and most of the smoke had dissipated.
“Unfortunately, some of those renters throw in kids’ toys, and things with batteries,” Burton said. “So they’re suspicious that it may be a battery or something, something ignited those piles.”
Burton said crews are using six to seven tractors with water tankers to fight the blaze.
There were no injuries as a result of the incident.
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
