Friends, family members share tributes for teen fatally shot outside West Valley City WinCo

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 16, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Judge Memorial High School is remembering a student lost to gunfire Saturday night in West Valley City.

Nuer Deng, a junior and basketball player at the private Catholic school, was shot as he and friends sat among others gathered in the WinCo parking lot. West Valley City police are asking for tips from anyone who may have information about the case to call dispatch at 801-840-4000.

Deng’s high school shared a tribute.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Nuer Deng, a cherished member of the Judge Memorial class of 2025,” the social media statement says.

“Nuer tragically lost his life as an innocent victim of a shooting incident. Our hearts ache for his loving family as they grieve the loss of this incredible young man. Nuer’s smile lit up the hallways at Judge Memorial.”

A prayer service was scheduled for yesterday.

“Our loving thoughts and prayers remain with Nuer’s family and friends,” the school’s statement says. “Our counseling team is available for any students that may be in need of some additional support during this difficult time.”

A family member posted a fundraising account with another tribute to Deng.

“We are saddened to share the news that our beloved brother Nuer Deng passed away early morning on July 14, 2024. He was an extraordinary child with a great deal of potential. He touched the lives of many with his joyful smile and kind nature.

“As we navigate through this difficult time, we look to our community to support us financially so we are able to properly celebrate the amazing life of Nuer Deng. Any contribution is helpful and means the world to our family.”

A call reporting Deng’s shooting went to dispatch at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, and he was transported to Intermountain Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A West Valley City Police official told Gephardt Daily Sunday that some of the people gathered at the scene may have been involved in street racing.
