UINTAH COUNTY, Utah, Dec. 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — One adult was arrested and two juveniles detained after a lengthy high-speed pursuit in Uintah County early Sunday morning.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jarvis C. Cuch, 27, of Fort Duchesne, was booked into jail on multiple charges, including failure to stop at the command of a peace officer, aggravated assault on a peace officer, weapon possession, obstruction of justice, DUI, child endangerment and multiple other offenses, according to a news release from the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office.
At the time of Cuch’s arrest, he was listed as a fugitive with the U.S. Marshal’s Service.
The two juveniles were taken to Split Mountain Youth Detention Center and were later released to family.
The news release said the pursuit began at about 2:45 a.m. after a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officer attempted to stop a passenger car for speeding on 6500 East in Fort Duchesne.
“When the officer activated his lights and siren, the vehicle sped away from the officer at a high rate of speed,” the news release states. “As the BIA officer pursued the vehicle, a handgun was fired from the fleeing vehicle. The pursuit continued on roads in and around Fort Duchesne reaching speeds of 90 mph and then went east on Highway 40 towards Vernal.”
Uintah County deputies and BIA officers continued to pursue the vehicle at speeds that exceeded 100 mph as items were being thrown from the fleeing vehicle.
Prior to the pursuit reaching Vernal, a Vernal City Police Officer was able to deploy tire spikes, successfully deflating one of the fleeing vehicle’s tires. The vehicle continued through Vernal, which is 24 miles away from Fort Duchesne, before the driver turned onto a dead-end road and stopped at 700 S. 500 East, where the three were taken into custody.
The investigation is still ongoing.
