FARMINGTON, Utah, June 2, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A man was arrested outside a Farmington Smith’s grocery store after he allegedly stole more than $5,000 worth of gift cards.

Naisu Chen, 41, was detained after a Smith’s employee reported seeing the gift cards sticking out of the man’s pocket. She and a second employee followed Chen out of the store, she told officers.

“I attempted to speak with the suspect but he only spoke Mandarin,” says Chen’s affidavit, filed Friday by a Farmington police officer.

“Another officer translated. After speaking to the suspect, I went back to Smith’s and spoke with the witness (employee) and she stated there were 30 gift cards that have been tampered with and 10 Razor Gold gift cards missing.”

The officer noted that Chen is currently on probation or parole, and that type of theft is “a well known ‘scam’ that Homeland Security is aware of.”

Chen was ordered held without bail.
