NORTH OGDEN, Utah, Jan. 21, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Police in North Ogden arrested a man for assault after he allegedly admitted that, while armed with a box cutter, he chased a Spanish-speaking man “due to his race,” adding that “he was motivated after watching the film ‘Sicario’ the night before.”
“Sicario,” a 2015 film, is set on the Mexico-Arizona border, and the plot concerns the war against illegal drugs.
The suspicious-circumstances call was dispatched to North Ogden police at 9:43 a.m. Monday. An officer responded to a 7-Eleven, where a man dressed in dark colors had reportedly “jumped into the road and onto the complainant’s vehicle. Due to a time lapse between the incident and the dispatched call, I drove the area in search of the suspect.”
Soon after, the same officer was dispatched to the Wells Fargo in North Ogden “due to a male who matched the description of the suspect, jumping into the dumpster located in the parking lot and throwing items. Upon arrival, I saw the suspect, later identified as Jeffrey Wilson, walking south through the parking lot near the Wendy’s restaurant. I also noticed that Jeffrey was wearing a black jacket, black pants, and black shoes.”
The NOPD officer called Wilson over.
“Jeffrey quickly turned around and raised an object to his neck,” the arrest document says. “I asked him what the object was, and he stated that it was a box cutter.”
The officer commanded Wilson to drop the box cutter, and he did, the arrest document says. Wilson was placed into the prisoner compartment of the patrol vehicle, and two women approached the officer and “informed me that they were assaulted by Jeffrey as they were exiting the Starbucks Coffee Shop.
“The victims stated that they watched as Jeffrey was chasing a Spanish speaking male through the parking lot and into the business. The victims stated that as they were exiting, due to the two males running into the business, Jeffrey pushed both of them to the ground, resulting in them feeling pain.
“I was later notified by another officer that he was speaking with the male who Jeffrey had chased through the parking lot. The officer informed me that Jeffrey chased the male with a box cutter, and the male was visibly distressed.”
Wilson was interviewed at the Weber County jail after being advised of his Miranda Rights.
“Jeffrey waived his rights and agreed to speak with me. I asked him why he chased the male with a box cutter, and he stated that he chased him due to his race. Jeffrey informed me that he was motivated after watching the film ‘Sicario’ the night before. I then asked Jeffrey why he pushed the two women at Starbucks, and he stated that he was trying to ‘get to his target.'”
Wilson was arrested for investigation of alleged:
- Aggravated assault, a third-degree felony
- Two counts of assault, a class B misdemeanor
- Disorderly conduct, an infraction
Wilson was ordered held without bail.
