PROVO, Utah, March 15, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Provo Police Chief John King was asked to resign earlier this week because of sexual misconduct allegations, the city’s deputy mayor confirmed on Wednesday evening.
The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office was asked to investigate the claims of a woman who came forward in February to accuse King of sexual assault. Salt Lake County D.A. Sim Gill said the decision not to file charges was “based on the evidence.”
But Provo Deputy Mayor Corey Norman has confirmed that enough red flags were raised during the investigation that Provo Mayor John Curtis asked for King’s immediate resignation, which the chief provided.
The mayor has indicated he will provide more detailed information at a Thursday morning news conference.
King had told multiple news outlets on Tuesday that he was leaving his position to spend more time with his family in the Baltimore area, and that his mother was having health problems.
In a brief resignation letter to his department staff, King wrote that his stint in Provo had been “the best professional experience of my career.”
King was hired as Provo police chief in 2013, and has more than three decades in law enforcement.
