SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 31, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 39-year-old Saratoga Springs man has been booked into the Salt Lake County jail to await extradition to Nevada after the murder of a woman there.

A statement from the Lyon County (Nevada) Sheriff’s Office says its detectives traveled to Utah Monday, and with help from law enforcement agents here and the U.S. Marshal’s Office, arrested Robert Matthew Richards as a suspect in the murder of 25-year-old Sara Filiatraut, whose body was found in a remote area of Nevada’s Churchill County on May 22 of this year.

She had last been in contact with family about a month earlier, and was reported as missing and endangered.

The Washoe County (Nevada) Regional Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Filiatraut’s death as a homicide.

Law enforcement confirmed Richards, who had been staying in Nevada at the time, as a suspect. They also served a warrant at his former Colorado residence, where they collected more physical evidence, the Lyon County Sheriff statement says.

“Based on evidence collected through this investigation, an arrest warrant for Richards, charging him with one count of first degree murder, was issued in late July,” the sheriff department’s statement says.

On Monday, Richards was taken into custody and “booked into the Salt Lake County Jail in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he will remain until he is extradited to Lyon County to face trial for the murder of Sara Filiatraut,” the statement says.

The news release thanked law enforcement officials in Nevada and Colorado and Utah, including the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Saratoga Springs Police Department.

It also asked anyone with any information on the case to contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Investigative Division at [email protected] or 775-463-6600.
