Snowbound driver rescued near Iron County’s Blowhard Mountain

IRON COUNTY, Utah, Nov. 18, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A Southern Utah University student from Arizona who wanted to spend a little time in the snow on Saturday got more than he wished for.

“Iron County Search and Rescue received a call shortly after 11 p.m. concerning a stranded motorist,” says a statement issued by Iron County Search and Rescue.

“The subject was a 20-year-old SUU College student from Arizona on Cedar Mountain. Coordinates from the individual showed he was directly east of Blowhard Mountain on the East side of Hwy 148.”

The group responded with four volunteers, two Iron County Sheriff deputies, three trucks, four snowmobiles and one all terrain vehicle.

“The stranded motorist was discovered to be approximately 400 feet east of Hwy 148 in roughly two feet of snow,” the statement says. “He informed the rescuers that he wanted to take a ride up the mountain and drive around in the snow and found himself off the improved trail when he got stuck.

“Temperatures were in the single digits, but the driver had warm clothing and plenty of fuel.”

Rescuers were able to help the driver get out and back down the mountain without further incident. The call concluded just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
