CACHE COUNTY, Utah, June 3, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah Highway Patrol has identified a man who died when the car drifted over a centerline and into oncoming traffic.

The man who died Friday was Robert C. Downs, 44, from Wellsville.

It was about 6:39 a.m. Friday when Downs, driving a 1992 blue Ford Thunderbird, was headed west on State Route 101.

“A Peterbuilt semi hauling cattle was traveling east in the same location,” a Utah Highway Patrol statement says.

“Just west of milepost 1, the Thunderbird drifted left over the centerline and struck the semi head-on. After the collision, the Thunderbird went sideways back to its right and off the shoulder of the roadway.

“The semi ran off the road to its right where it partially jackknifed. The semi was hauling live cattle.”

The trailer stayed upright. Two cattle died, the statement says.

“The driver of the Peterbuilt was not injured. The 44-year-old male driver of the Thunderbird was the only occupant and stained fatal injuries, (and) passed away at an area hospital.

Lanes were closed for about 5.5 hours during the investigation, the UHP statement says.
