OGDEN, Utah, Dec. 25, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A 43-year-old woman was booked into the Weber County Jail Tuesday after she allegedly tried to kidnap a 1-year-old boy from his parents as they walked south in the 3600 block of Wall Avenue, near the Newgate Mall.
“A woman, later identified as Cathy Coburn, approached and asked the complainant for money,” says an arrest document filed by an officer of the Ogden City Police Department.
“The complainant declined, explaining that they had a child, and began to turn around to continue walking. As they were turning, Cathy reached out and attempted to snatch the child away from the parents.
“The complainant’s spouse quickly reacted and pulled the child away to prevent Cathy from taking him.
“Although contact was not made with the child, if the father had not reacted quickly, Cathy would have successfully taken the child from their guardians without consent.”
Officers spoke with witnesses “who corroborated the complainant’s statements,” arrest documents say. “In addition, I observed surveillance footage that captured the incident at the Common Cents located on 36th and Wall Avenue. I observed Cathy reaching and attempting to grab the child from the parents.”
Riverdale report
A subsequent arrest document, filed by an officer of the Riverdale Police Department who also responded to the scene, says that Coburn was handcuffed for transport to that department’s police department for further questioning.
“As Cathy was getting into my patrol vehicle, once she sat on the back seat, she kicked at me, causing her shoe to fly off,” the Riverdale PD arrest document says.
“When Cathy kicked at me, her foot did not connect with my body. The other Riverdale officer assisted getting Cathy into the back of my patrol vehicle and she then kicked him as well. When Cathy kicked at the other Riverdale officer, her foot connected with his body.
Coburn was booked into the Weber County jail for investigation of alleged crimes documented by the two departments. In total, she is being investigated for:
- Attempted child kidnapping, a first-degree felony
- Two counts of assault by a prisoner, a third-degree felony
Coburn was ordered to be held without bail, and remained incarcerated as of 5 p.m. Dec. 25.
