CLEARFIELD, Utah, June 3, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Police say a man in his 60s was shot and killed following a hit-and-run crash and road rage incident Monday evening.
Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call about 6:25 p.m. from a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash near state Route 193 and Industrial Parkway, Clearfield police said in a news release.
“There was an accident, one party tried to get away from the other, there were some frustrations about driving, and that resulted in [the shooting],” Assistant Chief Devin Rogers said.
The driver, described as a man in his 30s, continued to speak to emergency dispatchers while pursuing the other driver, who was fleeing the scene and attempting to evade him, Rogers said.
The two trucks drove into a neighborhood near 75 North and 1000 West, and the vehicle being pursued by the 911 caller came to a stop in the middle of the road near 300 North and 1200 West, according to the news release.
“Abruptly, the vehicle that was being followed stopped in the middle of the residential roadway here, exited his vehicle and approached the vehicle that was following the first vehicle,” Rogers said. “A shot rung out and left [the driver of the fleeing vehicle] deceased.”
The driver who called 911 was taken into custody and is cooperating with police, he said.
“We have recovered a weapon from the scene,” Rogers said.
Police have closed 1200 West from 200 North to 300 North while officials investigate the incident. The closure is expected to last several hours, police said.
Anyone with information about the hit-and-run crash and shooting that resulted is asked to call police at 801-497-8300.
“I would tell drivers that property damage is not worth the life of another,” Rogers said. “Regardless of whether that is damage to your property or somebody else’s, it’s not worth the risk of what could take place and what we’ve seen happen tonight.”
Police say the family of the deceased driver has been notified, though his name was not immediately released.
No other injuries were reported.
Officials with several agencies are assisting with the investigation, including the Syracuse Police Department, North Davis Fire District, Davis County Sheriff’s Office, and the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner.
