SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 9. 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Police say an armed man who confronted a Salt Lake City police officer early Thursday morning is in critical condition after being shot by the officer.
According to SLCPD news release, the officer was conducting a traffic stop at 1:41 a.m. near 375 South 765 West.
“During the investigation, a man not involved in the traffic stop approached the officer on scene. That person, a 32-year-old man, had a weapon,” the news release said.
“During the incident, the officer shot the 32-year-old suspect.
“Paramedics took the suspect to the hospital in critical condition.”
According to SLCPD Detective Michael Ruff, who spoke to reporters on scene, the suspect’s injuries are considered life threatening.
The driver from the initial traffic stop is not considered a suspect in the OICI, Ruff said.
No other injuries were reported.
Police from an outside agency are investigating the shooting “under the officer involved critical incident (OICI) protocol,” the SLCPD statement said.
Under Utah state law, police agencies are required to invoke the OICI protocol when a case meets the definition of a qualifying OICI incident.
