MIDVALE, Utah, Oct. 13, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to an apartment fire in Midvale Friday afternoon, and limited damage to two units.
Eric Holmes, Unified Fire Authority spokesman, said severe damage had rendered one unit uninhabitable, and that water damage from dousing the fire had caused an unknown amount of damage to the apartment below.
Red Cross workers were called to the complex, at 795 W. 7990 South, to help the residents of the two units make arrangements for a place to stay, Holmes said.
The cause of the fire and amount of damage done are still being investigated, but fire damage to the upper unit was “substantial,” Holmes said. No one was injured in the fire.
“With buildings like this, with multi-occupancies, we want to make entry as quickly as it is safe for us to do, and knock that down as quickly as possible,” Holmes said.
“While we are inside, we are going to check the adjacent units’ ceilings and make sure there’s no smoke.”
Fire can spread quickly in the open space between apartments’ ceilings, Holmes said, but had not in this case.
Firefighters also responded from Murray City, West Jordan and West Valley City, Holmes said. Units were dismissed as soon as it was clear they were not needed.
“It’s very common in this valley to have departments help each other,” he said. “We work together and we train really well together.”
