BEAVER COUNTY/WASHINGTON COUNTY/IRON COUNTY, Utah, March 2, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A man wanted on warrants out of Colorado is in custody after leading authorities on a three-county pursuit Thursday afternoon.
The incident began at about 4:30 p.m. on southbound Interstate 15.
At Milepost 78, a Beaver County deputy stopped a black 2006 Subaru for a traffic violation.
According to a UHP news release, an adult male passenger switched places with the driver and fled from the traffic stop.
A broadcast went out, the release states, and “Sgt. Bauer went North to mile 78 to look for the vehicle and Trp. Dan Nielson went to mile 72 to set up spikes.”
Spikes were also set up at mile 63 by Trooper Brian Bairett.
Bauer saw the Subaru coming south at 115 mph, and activated his lights and siren and gave chase.
The Subaru continued speeding south, passing semi trucks on the right, the release says.
It then ran over the spikes Trooper Nielson had set at Milepost 72, and its two right-side tires started deflating.
Even then, the pursuit continued at 90-100 mph, and Iron County Sheriff’s deputies became involved.
Spikes had been deployed at Milepost 63, but the driver kept heading south. It wasn’t possible to spike the remaining tires at that time because of other traffic
In Washington County, spikes were again deployed and were successful in deflating the Subaru’s other tires.
As the vehicle started up the grade near mile 19, the release says, it slowed enough for Nielson to perform a PIT maneuver and bring the pursuit to an end.
Two adults and three juveniles were taken into custody.
The driver of the vehicle, Jerry L. White, 33, told officers, “he was trying to get away because he had warrants out of Colorado.”
