HUNTSVILLE, Utah, April 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman walked into her Huntsville cabin Wednesday and found a strange man asleep in her recliner, and several beers missing.
A probable cause statement tells how 37-year-old Thomas Luke Shupe came to be booked into the Weber County Jail on multiple felony charges.
At 11:06 Wednesday, officers were sent to a cabin along Highway 39 in Huntsville.
“Complainant explained when she first arrived at the cabin, she saw Thomas asleep in the recliner chair in the living room,” the probable cause statement says.
“Complainant stated there were several prescription bottles which were missing from the cabin as well as several cans of Miller Lite beer. Complainant said she asked Thomas for identification, and as he was searching through his backpack, she saw a black handgun in a black holster in the bag. Complainant was able to get a picture of Thomas before he left, and then he took off heading east, up toward Monte Cristo.”
Shupe was located nearby, and a black handgun was found in his possession.
“Officers then began to search the area and roadway where Thomas came from,” the statement says. “They saw empty shell casings on a balcony to an A-frame cabin, and a .22 caliber rifle could also be seen inside the window to the cabin. Officers observed smoke coming from inside of the cabin, and requested the Weber Fire Department to respond to assess the situation.”
The source of the smoke turned out to be a fire in a wood stove.
The statement said it was apparent the cabin had been entered, and the owners confirmed a handgun had been stolen.
“Both cabins as well as items within the cabins had been damaged by this defendant,” the statement said. “During the search of his backpack upon arrest, officers located marijuana. He is currently on federal probation, which makes him a Category 1 restricted person.”
Shupe faces charges of:
- Two counts of burglary, a second-degree felony
- Theft, a second-degree felony
- Possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, a second-degree felony
- Theft, a class B misdemeanor
- Criminal mischief, intentionally damaging or destroying property, a class B misdemeanor
- Possession of a controlled substance, marijuana/spice, a class B misdemeanor
