SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 17, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office has declined to file criminal charges for Unified Police Department’s Aug. 24, 2023 use of deadly force.

The case involved the fatal shooting of Aaron Lee Zimmerman, 46, of Kearns. UPD officers responded to a home for the second time in about three hours on domestic violence-related calls, according to the Unified Police Department.

Police previously were called to the home to investigate a verbal domestic violence incident, but no arrests were made, UPD stated in a news release issued at the time.

When officers returned just after midnight on another domestic violence call, Zimmerman came out of the home with a gun, and was fatally shot by police, the release said.

The three officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave while the Salt Lake City Police Department investigated the shooting.

On Oct. 6 of last year, the results of the investigation were presented to the DA’s Office, and the decision not to prosecute was announced today.
